Does anyone know of any way to switch off those bloody "Low Disk Space"
warnings in Windows XP? I know my drives are full, I don't need the
dratted thing taking up screen space every five minutes to tell me that...

TweakUI for Windows XP. It gives you the lovely, lovely option of turning
off those horrid little balloon tips.

There used to be a registry hack to do the same thing but I can't seem to
find it any more.

Here's a quick hack for you. Fire up Windows Explorer, and select the root
directory of your C: drive. Ctrl-A to Select All, and then Del. Say Yes to
every subsequent dialog. That should get rid of the warning, at least for a
few weeks.

Okay okay, I'll get my coat. :-)

Seriously, I checked through the registry on the kids' box, and there
doesn't seem to be anything in there that you can tweak. I think the best
thing you can do is write a whole bunch of stuff to CD and then blow it
away. How long this is effective depends on you, really - on our system, it
would probably set us fair for another year or two, but if you're a heavy
downloader or photographer...

It worked!

Here, have mine... ;-)

Peter suggested TweakUI - I'll give that a shot. Haven't used that since
Win98... ;-)

The main problem is that my C drive is only ten gigs, and has gone
unformatted for three and a half years now - and we all know what
Windows is like for hoarding random gunk. There's not a lot that can be
easily deleted...

Try finding and editing this key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Explorer\
Advanced]

and change the value of EnableBallonTips from a 1 to a 0

While others may give you the answer you're looking for, I have a few tips
on how to free up disk space without getting rid of anything:

- Run "cleanmgr.exe" (or "Disk Cleanup" under "Accessories\System Tools").
Check "Compress old files" too -- it's unchecked by default. This form of
compression is totally transparent to the user -- the files will work like
any other file, and be decompressed on the fly when accessed, and
recompressed again if changed or saved, without user intervention.

- Empty the temporary folders beyond what cleanmgr.exe does. *Both*
C:\WINDOWS\Temp and the temp folder for each user (enter %TEMP% in an
explorer window to get the user temp folder).

- Compress files you don't use often. Select the files and folders,
right-click, properties, Advanced, and finally check "Compress contents to
save disk space". A search for *.bak, *.log and large files should give
you a nice start for files to compress.

- Delete all crash dumps and logs. Open
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson"
Delete everything there.

- Delete old service pack folders in C:\WINDOWS\ unless you're really
planning on uninstalling a service pack.

- Reduce the amount of disk space used for System Restore ("Revert to
<date>" functionality". "My Computer" -> "Properties" -> "System
Restore" -> Choose drive -> "Settings", then move the slider to the left.
You would rarely need like 5-10 GB for this -- how big are the updates and
packages you usually install? I'd think that 1 GB would be plenty for most
users.

- Reduce the paging file size. "My Computer" -> "Properties" ->
"Advanced" -> "Performance": "Settings" -> "Advanced" -> "Virtual memory":
"Change". Select "custom size", and enter reasonable values for Inital and
Max sizes. Most people should be able to get away with 256-512 MB here,
unless they run a LOT of simultaneous programs and have little real RAM.
Better yet, if you have more than one drive, have the paging file be on a
different drive than C: (or, for max performance, spread with one smaller
paging file of identical size on multiple drives).

Yes, there is. See my other post.

Snipped the lot - thanks for all those, there were a couple I hadn't
thought of. I should really go through, make a list of every app I use,
copy down the keys and things and do a complete reinstall, but urgh... ;-)

Nothing much that takes up a lot of space - I've used Spacemonger to
keep an eye on where it all is, and it's all tiny files all over the
place. Some probably essential, lots junk, but I'm not sure which are
which. The ones you mentioned are all gone.
